Eingriffe in etablierte Systeme sind stets ein delikates Unterfangen. 49 Jahre nach der Gründung des »Comité International Pierre de Coubertin« mit Sitz in Lausanne – der Hauptstadt der olympischen Bewegung – war es Zeit für einen behutsamen Wandel.
Das alte Zeichen war eine überladene Mischung politischer und sportlicher Symbole, gekrönt von einer comichaften Darstellung Coubertins. Trotz all seiner Unzulänglichkeiten war es vielen ans Herz gewachsen – über Grenzen und Kulturen hinweg.
Das Redesign erfolgte in mehreren Stufen – als delikater Prozess der Identifikation mit Entscheidungsträgern, stets im engen Dialog mit dem Vorstand und internationalen Mitgliedern. Ziel war es, alle Entscheidungsträger aktiv in den Gestaltungsprozess einzubinden und im Austausch die Potenziale einer Überarbeitung gemeinsam herauszuarbeiten. Auch Mitglieder aus unterschiedlichsten Kulturkreisen wurden argumentativ beteiligt und begleiteten den Prozess bis zum letzten Schliff.
Grundlage war eine Büste Pierre de Coubertins des Künstlers Karlheinz Oswald, die als Identifikationsfigur längst etabliert war. Durch die Reduktion symbolisch überladener Elemente entstand ein kraftvolles Zeichen – klar, würdig und zeitlos. Es steht für die Fortführung und Erneuerung von Coubertins Gedankenwelt im olympischen Geist.

Intervening in established systems is always a delicate undertaking. 49 years after the founding of the »Comité International Pierre de Coubertin« in Lausanne – the capital of the Olympic Movement – the time had come for a careful transformation.
The former emblem was an overloaded mix of political and athletic symbols, topped by a cartoonish depiction of Coubertin. Despite all its shortcomings, it had found a place in many hearts – across borders and cultures.
The redesign unfolded in multiple stages – as a delicate process of identification with key decision-makers, consistently carried out in close dialogue with the board and international members. The aim was to actively involve all stakeholders in the design process and, through exchange, jointly uncover the potential of a new visual identity. Members from diverse cultural backgrounds were included argumentatively and accompanied the process right down to the final detail.
The foundation: a bust of Pierre de Coubertin by sculptor Karlheinz Oswald – long established as a figure of identification. By eliminating symbolically overloaded elements, a powerful mark emerged – clear, dignified, and timeless. It stands for the continuation and renewal of Coubertin’s intellectual legacy within the Olympic spirit.
